Born in Carthage, Missouri to John and Alfleta McCurry; Jona was raised in Kansas City, where she attended East High School. After the family’s return to Carthage, Jona graduated from Carthage High School.
As a young woman, she became an avid outdoors enthusiast; enjoying camping and shooting. She was a pioneer in the early days of SCUBA diving in Missouri. After moving back to Kansas City, she became a trend-setting interior designer. Her work began to get wide recognition, especially after she began to design the homes of Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famers Hank Stram, Ed Budde, and Len Dawson, as well as Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer Lou Pinella. After moving to Springfield, she made a name for herself in the local interior design community by starting several successful businesses. She further legitimized her design talents by receiving a professional degree in Interior Design from SMSU (now Missouri State University).
Her friends and family knew Jona to have a wry sense of humor, a discerning eye, an easy laugh, and a million-dollar smile. She loved to recount the stories of her children and cherished friends, typically done with humor and a substantial degree of embellishment. She always looked people in the eye; remembered not only their names, but usually almost everything else about them. She was truly interested in their lives and stories of others. She admired boldness and colorful personalities to her last day. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her family would like to extend special thanks to the many kind people whom cared for her in her last days. She not only gave us life but she taught us, “Joie de vivre.”
Jona is survived by her sister, Carolyn McCurry of Springfield; as well as four (4) adult children; Jim Hays of Sacramento, CA; Scott Huffman of Miami, FL; Christy Phillips of Springfield, MO; and Steve Huffman of Springfield, MO. She is also survived by eight (8) grandchildren; Emilie Kauffman of Carmel Valley, CA; Matthew Kirson of Sacramento, CA; Taylor Huffman, Quinton Huffman, and Brett Richard, all of Miami, FL; and Beau Phillips, Cole Huffman, and Brionna McDonnell, all of Springfield, MO. Jona is also survived by one great-grandson, Boden Kauffman of Carmel Valley, CA, and her beloved cousin, well-known Springfield attorney, Bruce McCurry.
A celebration of a “life well lived” will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, September 23, 2017, at the Gillioz Theatre. To RSVP, visit Jona Huffman on Facebook. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Cremations of the Ozarks.
